S.A.Y. Detroit: Reaching Out to Detroit's Homeless

S.A.Y. Detroit was formed as a result of a story Mitch Albom read during the Detroit Super Bowl week in February, 2006. The story noted that the homeless in Detroit would be given a special Super Bowl “party” to keep them off the streets for the big weekend, but would be put back on the streets come Monday morning. Albom was disturbed by this and went public with a plea to do as much for the homeless the rest of the winter as the city was willing to do for a weekend. He spent a night in a shelter to call attention to the issue. The response was overwhelming, and enough money was increae hours of shelter operation, buy a van, hire a medical professional, purchase beds, and build a day-care center for children of homeless women. Soon, S.A.Y. Detroit (which stands for Super All Year Detroit, instead of Super oneweekend) was a fully formed 5013-c charity that now distributes money to shelters in Detroit for projects specifically designed to help the plight of those in need.To learn more, click here.

Easter Photos Raise Money for Detroit's Homeless

Thanks to the wonderful efforts of the people at Somerset Collection. recent photos of children with the Easter bunny were earmarked to raise money for the homeless in Detroit. Money was donated for every photo taken. By the time the lines had cleared from the bunny's lap, $40,000 had been raised!

This was an idea totally initiated by the generosity of the Somerset Collection folks, and we thank them so much for what they have done for Detroit's homeless.
